Engineering Essentials: Relays and Contactors
Electromechanical relays open and close electrical contacts to turn a load off and on. Most electromechanical relays feature a moving part called an armature which is pulled by the magnetic field the coil produces. They’re frequently used because they cost less than corresponding electronic switches. But some or their qualities are superior to those of SSRs. For instance, electromechanical relays can have numerous cThe typical electromechanical relay uses an armature that pivots when a magnetic field in the energizing coil pulls it. The movement of the armature opens and shuts mechanical contacts.ontacts electrically isolated one from another. Electromechanical relays also provide a contact resistance that will be lower than that of SSRs (tens of milli ohms versus about 100 Ω). Contact capacitance is also less, that might help high frequency circuits. Electromechanical relays are not as likely to be turned on by transients than SSRs and may be less readily damaged by brief shor
